What if an app or web site I am using does not recognize an email address featuring my .realtor or .realestate domain as being valid?
A: Most sites that ask for an email address will try to validate what is entered by the user to ensure the email appears legitimate. Unfortunately many of these sites have not updated their validation process to address the new gTLDs like .realtor. They may have set their validation parameters to specifically look for emails with common endings such as .com, .net, .edu, etc. This is what makes the site believe that a .realtor or .realestate email is in invalid.
The site operator must update their email validation to accept emails with .realtor (and the other newer gTLDs like .realestate as well). This requires the site operator to make some technical changes to their site.
There are two actions you can take when you come across an app or website that does not accept an @nar.realtor (gTLD) email address:
- Notify the Business: You can send an email to the web site’s customer support team explaining your experience, along with a link that provides them with information on how they can correct the issue. Your message could be something like the following, depending on the particular issue(s) you encountered:
Ex. App: “Your app and this web contact form (or web site) [URLs] provided need to be updated to accept gTLD email addresses, for example name@nar.realtor. Your web site has been updated to permit the new email addresses to create an account, but not the app or customer service inquiry web form. So I was unable to login to the app using my current active email, it returns an error message. Please pass this along to your tech team. They can learn more about the new gTLDs and how to make your applications Universal Acceptance compliant at this resource provided by ICANN: https://uasg.tech/information. I would appreciate being notified once this has been corrected so I can access your app. (Sometimes you may be required to provide an alternate email address to receive a response when submitting an inquiry).

Ex. web site: Your web account form needs to be updated to accept gTLD email addresses, for example name@nar.realtor. Your contact us form seems to have been updated, but not the account form so I was unable to update my email address to my current active email, it returns an error message. Please pass this along to your tech team. They can learn more about the new gTLDs at: https://uasg.tech/information. This resource on Universal Acceptance compliance has been provided by ICANN: https://uasg.tech/information. I would appreciate being notified once this has been corrected so I can update my email address.
NOTE: Including a screenshot highlighting the issue for the tech team receiving the report will be helpful toward resolution. If you’re on a laptop, you can capture the screen display from your browser by selecting the “Shift-Print Screen” buttons at the same time (or Snip & Sketch), you can then copy/paste it into an email, or paste/save/trim/add note it in Paint. On a mobile phone you can take a photo of your screen and send it to your email. Several examples of screenshots where a note has been added are provided for reference.
2. You can also report the issue to ICANN: There is also a web form where you can submit a ticket to ICANN’s Universal Acceptance Technical Working Group that a web site and/or app is not accepting email using the new TLDs. The form will request that you submit a screenshot and URL where the problem occurs. They will send a follow-up email to the particular web site.
