What is DNS?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is like the phonebook of the internet. We access websites online through domain names like get.realtor or nar.realtor. Your web browser interacts through IP addresses. DNS translates a domain name into an IP address so your browser can connect to the website's server and load the website.

An IP address, like 192.168.1.1, is hard to memorize. Imagine having to keep track of the IP address of every website you want to visit. DNS and domain names eliminate the need to remember IP addresses and, instead, let us use easy to remember names to access websites.
